Two companies have been fined after unsafe asbestos work was carried out on a property in Surrey.
Staines Magistrates’ Court heard how Kingsley Asbestos Services Limited (KAS), although a licensed asbestos removal contractor, was sub contracted by Bourne Valley Construction Services Limited (BVCS) to complete a project.
KAS carried out repairs on water damaged materials in the properties after removing some asbestos containing materials. During the project to repair damaged wall coverings, one of the employees cut into a board which after thorough testing, resulted it to be Asbestos Insulation Board.
It was after investigation with a Health and Safety Executive (HSE), they had found that BVCS failed to communicate and plan the work information to KAS. The responsibility of completing a refurbishment and demolition survey was of both BVCS and KAS to arrange. Failure of these procedures being completed, works was carried out without establishing the location, presence and extend of asbestos containing material.
HSE Inspector Rebekah Dunn said: “Asbestos still kills around 5000 workers each year and around 20 tradesmen die each week as a result of past exposure."
